If you’re making a felt Christmas jumper (see previous post) or any similar small item of clothing, then small coat hangers are required!
You can sometimes buy these, although they can be quite expensive. You can also make them.
You will need:
a length about 12″ of suitable wire*
a round object, eg wooden spoon, for shaping
wire cutters or similar. Jewellery pliers are useful for turning the end in
*On this occasion I’ve used garden wire – it’s fairly firm (maybe a bit too much!) and covered in green plastic. I’ve also used a firm, fairly thick wire which bends easily but holds it’s shape. You can probably also use pipe cleaners
To Make:
Cut a length of wire approx. 12″ long. Fold the top down so that the loop will be double.
Bend this end round something like a wooden spoon handle, to form a nice loop.
Make the top a bit like a question mark, with a ‘neck’ below the loop, then take the wire out to one side.
Your spoon handle will be useful again now, to help curve the wire back, then out to the other side.
Bend it round the handle again to go back up, then across to the bottom of the ‘neck’.
(Ideally, the two sides will be the same length, but I ran out of time to make this happen!)
Bend the end round the ‘neck’ to hold it in place and cut off any excess.
Make sure, when you are making the ‘shoulders’ of the hanger, that it is no wider than your jumper.
